Love and the Capacity for Genuinely Loving

I talk about the nature of genuine love in all my books, but especially in Essentials for the Journey. You can also find many articles on the topic here on the blog. See, for example:

I also have much to say about some character types can’t love well or can’t truly love at all. See, for example:

Easy Deception in a Character-Impaired Age

We’re living in an age of unprecedented character dysfunction. Don’t get me wrong. As I’ve said many, many times, we’ve never been all that noble in character. Human beings are inherently imperfect, and we all have our character flaws. But there are types and degrees of character dysfunction. The prevalence of dysfunction matters, too, not just to relationships but to society at large. And what we’ve witnessed in the past several decades is the normalization of the most egregious manifestations of bad character. How did this happen? There are many reasons, some of them cultural. (See, for example: Culture Influences Character and Vice-Versa.) But perhaps one of more insidious reasons has to do with attractive qualities and behaviors in a person that deceive us about their capacity to love. And that’s what we’ll be talking when Character Matters airs live again on 5-7-25.
